    • Show Racism the Red Card Event

      Published 28/02/24

On Tuesday 27th February, children from Years 5 and 6 attended a workshop at Fratton Park. This event was called Show Racism the Red Card and children worked on their understanding of discrimination and racism alongside how this can be presented. In addition, they challenged stereotypes with the support of Portsmouth striker Yengi, realising that people can do all sorts of different things and that a preconceived notion isn't always the right one. The children participated well in the activities and enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside other schools and develop themselves.

    • Year 5 and 6 join the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

      Published 24/02/24

On Thursday, children from Years 5 and 6 attended a concert at Portsmouth Guildhall, hosted by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In preparation for the event, the children had been learning a song to perform alongside the orchestra using Makaton for the movements. In addition, they learned a three-part body percussion rhythm which they performed alongside the rest of the audience.

As part of the performance, the children were introduced to the different parts of the orchestra and listened to a range of music spanning different genres and ages. The show culminated with a final performance of Dancing Queen by ABBA, a firm favorite of those at Flying Bull.

Even though the weather tried to delay us and demoralise us, the children were fantastic in adapting to the changes in the day as were our parents who we wish to thank for being so patient and understanding with the delayed return.

This event has become an annual event for the children at Flying Bull and we look forward to next years theme: Sea Stories.

    • Switzerland - We Have Mail

      Published 16/01/24

Penpals from Switzerland! We’ve got mail! Year 6 children were excited to receive letters and cards from schoolchildren in Hombrechtikon, Switzerland! In December, Year 6 teachers were contacted by a former
exchange student, Basil Senn, who suggested this writing opportunity between 2 schools. Year 6 pupils were amazed at how good the letters were, as English is not the Swiss students’ first language. Our students are looking forward to writing their replies and sending their letters back to Switzerland.

Dakota: Today we got to read letters from people in Switzerland. I read a letter from a girl called Anna. She sounded very nice, and we had a lot in common. I hope Anna enjoys reading my letter.

Deborah: I think this activity is amazing. Receiving letters from people in Switzerland and sending letters back to them is totally amazing. I love their drawings and their pictures!

    • Y6 Trench Life Parent Workshop

      Published 12/01/24

This week, Year 6 welcomed parents to our writing workshop.

As part of their history learning, they have been studying primary and secondary sources about WW1, particularly life in the trenches. This has now turned into a writing opportunity.

The children were asked to create a soldier who experienced life in the trenches. They could choose age, name, rank, and nationality. Parents were encouraged to do this too.

Once they had stretched their legs, they returned to their classrooms to find the tables on their sides and the chairs upside down. In addition, gunshots, wind, rain, and cries could be heard echoing across the room.

The children were told to take cover, mind the barbed wire (chairs), and start writing a diary from the support trench.

The children really enjoyed this experience, and it made them feel like they were in a similar scenario, with many asking if they could do it again.

From here, the children edited their diaries before focusing on learning new skills to improve their writing further.
