Today saw the first ever Year 6 v Year 5 football match, organised by Mr Povey. 

Below he gives his commentary on the game. 

Both teams were a credit to the school this year when they represented the school team in their respective leagues and cups. I haven’t been able to host the annual Year 6 v Year 5 football match in recent years, so it was great to be able to do it this year. All the children who represented the school team this year were selected to play with Jack captaining the Year 6 team and Wayne captaining the Year 5 team.

Both captains chose their starting line-ups and made substitutions throughout. After the first 10 minutes, the teams were goalless as they sized each other up, Year 6 made the break through with 12 minutes on the clock through Mustafa, with Wayne levelling the game up almost immediately. With 5 minutes until half-time, the scores remained at 1-1. Leon then scored a 5 minute hat-trick to put Year 6, 4-1 up at half-time.

Year 5 came out for the second half fighting, with Finlay grabbing a goal back with only 30 seconds played. Year 6 then looked to have run away with the game, going 6-2 up with Logan and Layton putting them further ahead. The fighting spirit of the Year 5’s was then in full force, clawing themselves back from 6-2 down to 6-6. Finlay grabbed his second goal of the game, before Wayne scored 3 late goals to send the game to penalties.

Both teams shook hands and showed great sportsmanship, congratulating each other on a brilliant game. Year 6 just edged a nail bitting shoot out 3-2, with both goalkeepers (Lucas and Rano) making incredible saves.

A fantastic event ended with more great sportsmanship with the Year 6’s helping the Year 5’s to their feet.
